Junk or Gem: Baby Craft Art 2-9-15

IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER JUNK OR GEM… AND THIS MORNING’S ITEMS ARE UNLIKE ANYTHING WE’VE SEEN BEFORE. MEREDITH BARACK HAS MORE ON TWO PIECES OF BABY CRAFT ART. GOOD MORNING ASHLEY… AT FIRST GLANCE, THIS ARTWORK LOOKS LIKE IT MAY BE IN MEMORIAM OF A BABY… FORTUNATELY, IT IS JUST AN ODD REFLECTION OF HOW SOME HOUSEWIVES SPENT THEIR TIME 50-SOME YEARS AGO. 50:41 I BROUGHT TWO FRAMED PICTURES OF BABIES, THEY HAVE REAL HAIR ON THEM AND I REALLY DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM. MY HUSBAND BOUGHT THEM FOR ME TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO OUT OF HIS GRANDMOTHER’S ESTATE SALE. LISA SCHLIMGEN SAYS SHE HAD ALWAYS ADMIRED THE PICTURES AND FOUND THEM INTERESTING… BUT KNEW NEXT TO NOTHING ABOUT THEM. 51:12 I HAVEN’T DONE ANY RESEARCH BUT WHEN I’VE BEEN IN ANTIQUE STORES, I’VE ALWAYS KIND OF LOOKED OR SEEN, SEE IF I COULD FIND SOMETHING SIMILAR TO IT AND I’VE NEVER REALLY SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THEM SO I’VE ALWAYS BEEN VERY CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT THE ORIGINATION WAS OF THEM OR WHY THEY ARE THE WAY THEY ARE AND PERHAPS EVEN HOW OLD THEY ARE. RICARDO PAOLI OF RICK’S OLDE GOLD SAYS THE PICTURES WERE MADE HERE IN THE UNITED STATES BY STAY-AT-HOME MOM’S IN THE 1950’S. 53:53 WELL THE HISTORY BEHIND THESE PIECES, YOU CAN SEE THEY’RE INFANT CHILDREN, THREE DIMENSIONAL. IT’S CALLED BABY CRAFT ART. THE PICTURES USED WERE TYPICALLY CUT FROM A MAGAZINE, AND THEN THEY WOULD ADD MATERIALS LIKE CHANTILLY LACE, AND YES, REAL HUMAN HAIR. 59:24 THEY’D ACTUALLY HANG ‘EM IN THEIR LIVING ROOM, ACTUALLY AS A PROUD PIECE. THEY WOULDN’T MAKE IT AND PUT IT IN THE CLOSET. CONSIDERING THE THIRTY TO FORTY DOLLARS HER HUSBAND PAID FOR THEM… WE’RE GOING TO CLASSIFY THESE AS TWO LITTLE GEMS. 02:01 THEY’RE WORTH ABOUT $75 TO $100 A PIECE. WHICH MEANS THEY’LL CONTINUE TO HANG IN LISA’S HOME FOR YEARS TO COME. 52:43 I THINK THEY’RE COOL BUT PEOPLES REACTIONS ARE DIFFERENT TO THEM, SO I PLAN TO KEEP THEM. HAVE EITHER OF YOU EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT? I HADN’T EITHER… AND I KNOW THE BIG QUESTION THAT PEOPLE AT HOME MAY HAVE IS… AND I KNOW THE BIG QUESTION THAT PEOPLE AT HOME MAY HAVE IS… WHOSE HAIR WERE THEY USING FOR THE ARTWORK? WELL, ACCORDING TO RICK, HE SAYS THE WOMEN MAKING THE ARTWORK WOULD TYPICALLY USE THEIR OWN HAIR FOR THE PROJECTS. IT’D BE INTERESTING TO HEAR FROM ANY VIEWERS WHO REMEMBER THIS ARTWORK IN THEIR HOMES FROM THE 1950’S… AND IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO SEE ON JUNK OR GEM, YOU CAN REACH OUT TO ME VIA E- MAIL- WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON NBC
